Efstathios Dilaveris

Benefactor of Kythera

Efstathios Dilaveris was born at Karavas, Kythera in 1853 of poor parents. At the age of ten he came to Piraeus and made a living as a labourer but at the age of twenty he was a contractor.

In 1888 he created the first factory of mosaic slates in Greece and ten years later the first factory of ceramics. He extended his premises and his excellent products entered both the national and international market and he acquired great wealth.

Nicholas (Nick) George Politis



Nick Politis is one of five Australian-Kytherian’s to receive Australian honours in 2014. On the Queen’s birthday he was made a Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia, for significant service to rugby league football as an administrator.

James (Jim) Coroneos

Jim was born on 1st May 1925 in Gunning, NSW near Goulbourn.

His parents were Christophoros Melasofaos Coroneos & Melopomeni Comino from Karava in Kythera, who came to Australia, where they started a café in Gunning, named The Busy Bee.

Where did you study archaeology?
University of Sydney, 1984 – 1987 where I graduated with a BA (Hons) in archaeology. Graduated from Curtin University (Perth) in 1990 with a Graduate Diploma in Maritime Archaeology.

Professor Harry Poulos, AM, BE PhD DScEng, FIEAust FASCE FAA



Professor Harry George Poulos was born in 1940 in Katoomba, Australia, the second son of George Poulos (Tzortzopoulos) and Elene (nee Zantiotis), originally of Karavas, Kythera. His father George had come to Australia from Kythera in the early 1930’s, and Elene and elder son Theodore arrived in Australia some years later, in 1939.
