the way we were !

kythera we dont see anymore, this  photo was taken in the early 80s, when it wasnt uncommon to see this on a regular basis on the main road of the island as the village folk would take their animals to the horafa to feed them , and in most cases if you were in a car you would have to stop to let the animals pass...thats potamo in the background ...

lest we forget !!

great initiative from Mr.Peter Manea [ middle ] from sydney who from his own doing and costings is placing a war memorial plaque in potamos next year with all diaspora  kytherians  who served in any world wars .. well done peter thats great  !!....peter , the mayor announced this in potamos platia late june ... you will see all those great men and womens names engraved on that plague that served for their new countries ! .....

funny who you can find walking the streets in the villages of kythera , here rugby league  legend peter wynn , on the left , and thats stephen trifyllis , meet in potamo in july , peter wynn played rugby league for australia and new soutrh wales  in the late seventies and played for parramatta in sydney in those famous parramatta sides , that contained players such us  peter sterling , mick cronin, arthur beetson , ray price , brett kenny ,eric grothe  to name a few that he ...

Stephen Zantiotis & Yianni Venardos - August 1984

Stephen is my dad. Yianni (Katsavias) initially married Anastasia Zantiotis and had five children. After her untimely death due to childbirth complications, Yianni married Anastasia's sister, Dimitra. Anastasia and Dimitra were the sisters of my dad's father, Peter.

group of local potamo kids going around the different shops in potamo singing Christmas carol's on Christmas eve , you could hear them from the bakery to the bank , this is a long time Greek tradition and it was wonderful to see that on Christmas and new years eve

kythera landmark up for sale !!

well , im sure everyone that has been to the island has either stopped and bought something from the periptero or walked past this famous landmark of the island ... and now its up for sale , the past owner janni is selling the only periptero on the island to do other things, maybe sitting in that confined space finally got to him and its time to get out !!!!

after the playing delightful Christmas carols at the potamo platia , the band then went to the nursing home and played to the residents ... it was so emotional to see the faces of the people of the nursing home how mujch they enjoyed the music ...

Dimitroula Venardos (Zantiotis) - August 1986

I took this photo of my paternal grandfather's (Peter) sister in Potamos on August 13, 1986.
Dimitroula married her sister Anastasia's widower, Yianni Venardos in around 1936.
Anastasia had five children and died from childbirth complications. Dimitroula was told it would be good if she raised her sister's children. Dimitroula did not have any children of her own.
The children are Bill (dec'd), Steve, Andrew, Eugenia and Grigoroula.
All the boys emigrated to Australia. ...
