To read the latest on the Wind-Turbine situation on the island,
Background Information
Two major wind-turbine companies in Greece have applied to locate 160MW (80 - 100 towers) of wind-turbines on at various mostly central locations on the island. Although the move towards renewable energy is to be encouraged, many islanders and diaspora Kytherians are worried that the proposals will compromise the "unspoilt" reputation of the island. The island itself requires only about 6MW, so it is not simply to make the island self-supporting. The skyline of the island would be thus "recreated". Questions are also being raised about the decommissioning of such huge - up to 150 meter - towers when they no longer function in 15 to 20 years. The thought of Kythera being turned into a wind-turbine-graveyard worries many of us. The towers are also condemed by the Greek national bird-society as a threat to migratory birds who, in their hundreds of thousands, use the the island as a way-station on their way from northern Europe to Africa.
The team at Kythera-Family.net have created a petition requesting a full environmental impact study as well as giving the islanders a chance to vote on the issue before the go-ahead is given. You can view and sign it here:

Proposed areas for the turbine construction are:
• Kefalakia
the hills above Agia Pelagia
• Finikies
close to Logothetianika
• Mt Mermingares
south of Milopotamos
• Kefalovouni-Pyrgos-Krotiri
between Aroniathika and
Milopotamos
More areas could follow!
Those of you off the island who would like to help there is also the possibility of assisting with research and "lobbying". For more information please send a mail to James Prineas at james@kythera-family.net.
Below are entries regarding the windfarm plans. Many are questions we would like answered - if you would like to comment on them or even better, if you have the answers to the questions, please add them as "comments".
