Work begins on curating the Panayotis Fatseas archive (11 July 2006) |
|
We have at last begun the enormous task of curating the 2,200-odd glass negative plates of the Panayotis Fatseas archive, to be followed later by the no less extensive archive of his son, Manolis. The negatives, all of which are in very poor condition, require careful separation and cleaning before being stored under archival conditions prior to full evaluation, scanning and digitising; eventually, the best-preserved or most interesting will be digitally printed in preparation for the first major exhibition of Panayotis Fatseas’ work at the Benaki Museum, Athens in January 2008.
Most of the preliminary cleaning and curating is being undertaken by Chrysoula Fatseas, a great-niece of the photographer. She is completing a photography degree at the Athens Technical Institute, and has elected to fulfil her practical experience requirement by working for the Cultural Association under the guidance of archive director John Stathatos.
As can be seen from the accompanying photographs, a large, undisturbed space is essential for this work, and we are extremely grateful to Tassos Venardos of Venardos Hotel, Agia Pelagia, for providing us with just such a space.
