“A KYTHERIAN CENTURY” – Exhibition & book
May 2006
The Kythera Cultural Association’s contribution to the Panionian Congress, a wide-ranging exhibition of some 40 images from the photographic archive, was presented in the Kythiraikos Syndesmos (Kytherian Union) hall in Chora, the principal venue for the congress. The images ranged from early 20th century portraits, mostly in the form of digital enlargements, to recent colour landscapes.
The exhibition was accompanied by the publication of a 72-page, bilingual Greek/English illustrated monograph entitled A Kytherian Century: Images from the Kythera Photographic Archive, 1890-2006. This beautifully printed book includes 62 full-page photographs in black and white and colour, among them work by historic Kytherian photographers Panayotis Fatseas, Manolis Fatseas and Emmanouil Sofios, but also by distinguished contemporary photographers such as Nikos Panayotopoulos, Yiorgos Depollas and Eleni Maligoura. Other contributors include James Prineas and Kristina Williamson, both of whom have recently completed extensive photographic surveys of island society.
The publication was financed by a European Union grant to the Kytherian Union, while the Cultural Association provided the material and undertook the selection, organisation and design of the book, which was edited by John Stathatos. A Kytherian Century will be distributed in Greece by Tetarto Publications, Athens.
