Reptiles & Amphibians

Reptiles
Reptile are all cold-blooded animals. Some of them, such as snakes and lizards, have dry, scaly skin, while the turtle has a bony shell called a carapace. Land tortoises are rarely seen on Kythera, but sea turtles, long endangered, may be making a comeback.

Amphibians
Also cold-blooded, amphibians have smooth, moist skin, and usually live near water. Frogs and toads spend the larval stage of their lives in water as tadpoles. In recent years, freshwater ponds on Kythera have often been filled in or polluted, leaving fewer suitable habitats for the frogs of the island.
