Giasas! ti kanete;

My father Giorgos Nenes and my mother Panayotitsa Cominos were born in Potamos Kythera, but moved to and married in Australia. The Nenes family of nine immigrated to Australia and the USA.

My two sons Vasili, Minas and my husband Bill love travelling, having visited Greece many times and always stay in the great old Potamos house. We are planning another trip to the USA this year (2009). Who knows, this time may even get to meet a Nenes New Yorker :) Pios Xseri

Vale Theodore William Gavrily: Born Narrabri NSW 11/12/1924 - Died Manly, Australia 28/8/04.
Finally I have registered more than 12 months after Dad's passing. As it is when a patriarch leaves us, we struggle to recall what was such a familiar past when spoken so fondly by the man himself.
It is difficult to remember the many names of Dad's friends that were a great part of country NSW/Qld community last century. It didn't matter which country town I mentioned, Dad knew someone, a Kytherian inveriably, with a story or two to tell. I'm sure that some stories have been passed on to the next generation and we can share a rich & proud past with our kids.
It would be greatly appreciated that if you or your parents knew of Theo and want to share any good stories with me or simply say gidday.
Next time I log on I will tell you the one about the Greek who caused the match factory to strike!

My wife Julie and I visited Kythera in September 2003 for the first time. We stayed with Rereka Stratigou in Milopotomos (a first cousin to my mother on the Freeleagus side). It impressed me so much that I felt regret at not having made the effort to visit Kythera earlier in my life. My father is Denis Levonis (son of Menas and Caliope Levounis(Toowoomba)) and mother Despina (daughter of Dimitri and Anastacia Freeleagus (Brisbane)).

I am the paternal grandson of Anastasios T. Megalokonomos and Chrysanthy Klenzos (sp), and the son of Iannis A. Megalokonomos and Penelope Venardou. All are from Potamos, except Penelope, who comes from Agia Anastasia (a few kilometers from Potamos). My mother Penelope's parents were her mother, Damiani Venardou, and her father, Stamatis Venardos. I have a sister Chrysanthy Conomos and another sister Anastasia Conomos Condas; Anastasia is a Kytherian mover and shaker, coming every summer and being involved in charitable endeavors. My mother Penelope lives in San Jose, CA, and at the tender age of 93 is still very physically and mentally robust--so, if you want me to ask her about people and families in the Potamos area circa 1925-1950, please email me at jjconomos@sbcglobal.net, and I'll try to get some answers.

On 02.08.2004 Ted Panaretos of Jupiter, Florida, U.S., posted an entry to the guestbook. My cousin's grandfather, Theodore Panaretos, was my great uncle. He married my grandmother, Leona (by the Greeks) Flood, from Ireland, who became fluent in Greek. Their two children (son and daughter), born in the U.S., were raised Roman Catholic. I became a priest, serving first for 12 years in the Archdiocese of Detroit, then entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and currently live and work in Ohio.

Have been "visiting" the Kytherian site and I really am engrossed in all you have put together! Have contacted 2 of the other "visitors" and will continue to investigate all you have to offer. My fathers family is from there and I have visited often. After seeing my papou's house in ruins, I contacted the mayor of Potamos to see if I could fix it up but never heard back from them. I would love my children and grandchildren to be able to visit there in the future. My cousin Tassee Coroneos recently passed away. He loved the island - and did much for the Gerokomeion. I have seen the video of Tom Coroneos...it is wonderful! keep up the good work- it is is truly a labor of love!

Elene Claire (nee Hellen) - Brisbane/Australia

17.04.2004

I am the eldest grandchild of Vince (Valerio) and Elene Hellen (Veneris). Papou left Pourko when he was thirteen and initially went to work with his uncle in the USA. He joined his older brother Nicholas in Australia around 1906. My Yiayia Elene was from Potamos & was the oldest sister of Syd Levonis (see reference 9.3.04). She arrived in Australia in 1921. After living & working at Hellen's Siding area in central Queensland, the family settled in Goomeri. There were seven children and also a large extended family and network of friends throughout SE Queensland. I have wonderful memories of huge extended family get-togethers and celebrations.
In October this year I'll finally be visiting Kythera and Greece for the first time - thanks to this site, I've been able to explore & add to the stories I've heard over the years. I can't wait!
