The Tusk Shell, Dentalium vulgare, is a member of the Class Scaphopoda, characterized by a long, narrow shell that opens at both ends. Scaphopods bury themselves in the mud in deep water, and can be found washed up on the beach after a storm. Over 300 species of Tusk Shell exist. These were found at Diakofti, and measure 2 to 3.5 cm long. Photograph ©James Prineas, 2003
