MESA DEEMO VS. EXO DEEMO

Does anyone have information on the division of the islanders between mesa deemo vs. exo deemo? It may be divided by towns, by families or both but seems to be geographic in nature. Any info will be grately appreciated. I was told by my mother who got it from HER mother (my yiayia)that there was little social interaction (like marriages) between these geographic areas.
