During the 1990's KEVIN CORK undertook extensive research into cinema's in Australia.

Tragically, he died before completing his work, but most of the chapters of his Thesis, were completed.

His wife and children have kindly given permission for his work to be reproduced.

Most Australian's would be unaware of the degree to which Greeks, and particularly Kytherian Greeks dominated cinema ownership in Australia - especially in New South Wales.

This is Appendix 10 of Kevin Cork's previously unpublished Ph.D thesis.

In Appendix 10, Kevin Cork provides us with a comprehensive list of cinemas, operated by Greek's, and Greek-Kytherian's.

His research work was instrumental in causing Heritage Australia too actively intervene to save a number of Cinema's at risk of being lost or demolished. (See previous Cork entries.)

The importance of the Hellenic and Kytherian contribution to Australian cinema ownership and history is clearly demonstrated in Appendix 10.

It is difficult to know how to pass on to Kytherians the results of Kevin Cork's important research's.

In the end, I felt that the results should be passed on in the most extensive way - i.e. in full re-publication of all Chapter's and Appendices.

Eventually all Chapters and Appendices will appear on the kythera-family web-site.

I have also placed him under People, subsection, High Achievers, for reasons that become obvious once you have read the contents of his thesis.

The amount of adaptation depends on each particular situation. For some it is total gutting, while for others portions of the cinematic features have remained. Also included are three that have had their facades, side walls and roofs retained but internally they have been gutted: Liverpool Regal; Temora Strand; Wagga Wagga Plaza.


OPERATING - 7

Grafton Saraton - privately run. Still owned by Notaras family.
Laurieton Plaza - privately run.

Leeton Roxy - community owned

Mt Victoria Flicks - community hall, films privately run.

Scone Civic - privately run. Still owned by Coroneo family.

Tamworth Regent - privately run, but has been twinned and portion of the original building's cinematic features have been lost.

Tumut Montreal - still privately owned but local community has managed to acquire it on lease, using it as a community centre similar to Leeton Roxy.

REVERTED - 7

These are public halls that were used for a time for showing of films and, since films ceased to be shown in them, have reverted to their original use.


OTHER - 2

Gundagai Theatre - owned by the Masonic Lodge (attached to the theatre). Theatre closed.

Nyngan Open Air - privately owned by is falling into disrepair owing to non-use.
