Spyridon Nik. Andrikopoulos

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" :

Hailing from Xylokastro, the sympathetic young Mr. Spyridon N. andrikopoulos spent some years in America, before coming to Australia in 1910, at the age of just 19 years.

After two years of work alongside fellow Greeks, he founded, in partnership, two profitable establishments, on which one is a hotel, in the great city of Sydney.

Unfortunately, the supervening death of his partner blocked the road to progress in this direction for the young man, who was still at the beginning of his business activities.

Mr. Andrikopoulos is a young man of great activity and energy. He has a perfect command of English and is distinguished for his savoir faire.

He is the president of many notable bodies in the country town of Cobargo, in New South Wales, where he owns and manages a shop.

The illustration included here depicts Mr. Andrikopoulos, with the cup awarded him by the Cobargo Football Club, in recognition of his splendid service as President of the Club.

His commercial name is S. Andrew.

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" published in 1916 by John Comino. It is an important book as it was one of the first Greek books published in Australia for the Greeks back in the homeland. If they needed any more convincing of the golden opportunities awaiting them in Australia, it probably helped create interest amongst young Kytherians and other Greeks. Each of the men portrayed in the book paid for the honour, which, considering their reputation for thriftiness, must have made the decision a hard one for many a Kytherian.

The Kythera-Family.net team, with the support of the Nicolaus Aroney Trust and other generous sponsors, has undertaken to transcribe the entire book for the website and to translate it into English for the non-greek-speaking diaspora community. We hope to also produce a printed version of the translation of Life in Australia sometime in 2005.
