The Brothers Antonios and Dimitrios (Kosma) Souri

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" :

The brothers Antonios and Dimitrios Kosma Souri, who hail from Agia Anastasia, on Kythera, are the possessors of a total of three establishments. Two of these are located in the country town of Orange and the third stands in Uralla, in New South Wales. Many fellow Greeks work in these businesses, towards whom the managers, Messrs. the brothers Souri, behave with great solicitude. The Souri brothers are among the well-established Greeks of the area. They arrived in Australia in 1907 and, thanks to continous hard and persistent work, they have succeeded in buying these three establishments. Thanks to their commercial abilities, which have always distinguished them, they have brought their establishments to an enviable position. A year ago, they took on, as partner in the two shops in Orange, their cousin, Mr. St.

They have also gradually acquired a large amount of land, most of it planted with fruit-bearing trees.

The commercial name of the Souri brothers is: Peters and Co.

This biography is part of a collection from "Life in Australia" published in 1916 by John Comino. It is an important book as it was one of the first Greek books published in Australia for the Greeks back in the homeland. If they needed any more convincing of the golden opportunities awaiting them in Australia, it probably helped create interest amongst young Kytherians and other Greeks. Each of the men portrayed in the book paid for the honour, which, considering their reputation for thriftiness, must have made the decision a hard one for many a Kytherian.

The Kythera-Family.net team, with the support of the Nicolaus Aroney Trust and other generous sponsors, has undertaken to transcribe the entire book for the website and to translate it into English for the non-greek-speaking diaspora community. We hope to also produce a printed version of the translation of Life in Australia sometime in 2005.
