The Kasimatis Family-Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, The Martyr

Hobart’s Greek Orthodox Church was built on land donated by Gregory, Anthony and Basil Casimaty.
Mr George Haros, brother in law of Gregory and Anthony, was responsible for the modification of plans and erecting the building in conjunction with sub-contractors. Volunteers from the Greek community did the labouring and concreting.
The Foundation Stone was laid by the honourable consul Mr D.T. Rogers. OBE, JP on the 25th of March 1957, Greece’s Independence Day. Mr George Casimaty, father of Gregory, Anthony and Basil cut the ribbon at the Church’s opening, which was named in his honour.
Early in the 1980’s the Greek community enlarged the Church by the addition of wings made possible by the donation of a strip of land by Mr Malcolm Bethune and monetary donations by the Greek Community. The distinctive building with its octagonal tower, dome and blue glass windows is a Hobart landmark.
