Atonios, Eioranis (John/Jack) & Emmanuel Vlahogenis

Hello,

I have recently been researching the three brothers named in the title.

They were cafe proprietors in Barcaldine & Aramac, Central West Queensland, from the 1950s. They operated the Mayfair Cafe in Barcaldine as Vasos Bros., and John definitely used the name John Vasos for some time, per a couple of articles I have been able to find in Trove.

None of them seem to have married or have any descendants.

I came across this website because of a guestbook message that was made over 20 years ago that included the names Andreas Vlahogenis and Margarita Konomos (this is very close to the names recorded on death records for Emmanuel & Jack - Andress Vlahogenis and Mary Conomos).

I have tried the "contact" button to send a message to the author of the guestbook entry, but as it has been so long I thought it may also be worth posting a message myself.

Some of the older residents of Barcaldine recently began a discussion about the brothers and their cafe - the Mayfair Cafe - which prompted my interest in looking into them, as I am a keen genealogist and involved with the local museum.

Not much is remembered of Emmanuel as he seems to have been quite ill and rarely seen before passing away on the 29th Dec 1957; he is buried in the Barcaldine Cemetery.

There are some memories of Jack, but as he spent a lot of his time in the kitchen cooking, they are few. Jack passed away on the 7th Feb 1967, and he is buried in the Aramac Cemetery.

Antonios, however, there are many memories of. He was known by the name "Speshie/Specie" because of how he would boisterously greet every customer with "Speciality for you my friend?!". A few of the older residents recall him saying he had brothers who had returned to Kythera, and that he, too, wanted to return to the home country.

I would be thrilled to get in contact with anybody who may be able to tell me if Antonios did return to Kythera and when he passed.

Also, if there are any relatives, there is a photo of the front of the cafe circa 1957 with "Prop. Vasos Bros." painted on the awning, which may be of interest to them.

Unfortunately, the building was lost in a fire around the 1970s and the site rebuilt on, so it no longer exists.

Many thanks,

Leah-anne Newton
