Does St. Spyridon still exist on the island? If so, where/which town or village is in near? Thank you. RLM

Hi Rebecca,

There is a book written by Emmanuel Kalligeros in Greek about the history of towns in Kythera. The Kytherian Worl Heritage fund is seeking to do an English translation, which is more than likely going to be available sometime next year.

I have had a look through the book as it also lists churches . I have found 5 St Spyridons listed .

According to the book they were in the following towns:-
Kalokerines, Kapsali, Livadi, Mavitohori and Potamos.

Not sure which one you were referring to or if they are still in existence. But at least this is a start for you to research further. Good Luck!

Hi Rebecca,

There is a very old church, St. Spyridon on the north-west edge of Potamos. Is this the one you are looking for? I have been inside and taken photographs of the interior which were posted on this website in 2010. It is a Panaretos church and the key is kept by Panaretos family members who run a kafenion next to the Potamos square.

If I can be of any further help I can be contacted at [email protected].

Yes sir. Thank you very very much for your reply. My grandfather, a priest from Fratsia, Kosma(s) Leontarakis may have served in that church...just wondering if I was getting close. 'Becca
