[John Conomos's village of origin on Kythera is Potamos.] Toyota Australia chief set to join big boys By Ian Porter Melbourne AGE April 13, 2004 Toyota Australia is poised to join the top echelon of the giant Toyota group with the proposed naming of John Conomos as a managing officer, reporting directly to the board. Mr Conomos has been slated for election to become one of 44 managing officers at Toyota's June annual meeting in Japan. If elected, he will be only the fifth non-Japanese to hold such a senior post. His nomination has come after a successful period in which Toyota Australia has been market leader seven times in the past 11 years. An insider said it also recognised the success of the Altona production plant, which now turns out the Camry model to exacting Toyota standards and exports the bulk of its 100,000-plus output. ......Although Toyota Australia has often been market leader in Australia thanks to the sales of high-priced all-wheel-drive models, it has a [modest] earnings record despite an annual revenue that now exceeds $5 billion a year. The company is expected to report a relatively strong result for the year to March 31. The honour to be bestowed on Mr Conomos reflects the increasing visibility of Australia which, more than 40 years ago, was the first country outside Japan to build Toyotas. Toyota Motor Corporation.
