The work of Lafcadio Hearn to become better known in Greece through a KWHF initiative

Thursday, 11 November 2015

Japanese Ambassador in Greece, Masuo Nishibayashi, organised a ‘donation ceremony’ at the Embassy of Japan, in Athens, at 19.20 on the 11th November 2015. It was conducted to commemorate the donation by Mitsubishi Corporation Greece, of 500 each of the three books of Lafcadio Hearn, published in the Greek language, by the Kytherian World Heritage Fund, under the auspices of the Kytherian Association of Australia. The books will be offered to high school students in Attica, Lefkada, Kythira, and other Ionian islands. Auspiciously, for Japanese culture, the event was held during the chrysanthemum season.

The event was held to honour Lafcadio Hearn. He was born in 1850 in Lefkada of a Greek-Kytherian mother, Rosa Antoniou Kassimatis, and an Irish father, Surgeon-Major Charles Bush Hearn (of County Offaly, Ireland). His full names was Lafcadio Patrick Hearn, but he was always known as Lafcadio. Lafcadio was a Greek who loved Japan, where he lived from 1890. He died in Tokyo in 1904, aged 54 years, leaving behind an impressive oeuvre of poetic and literary work.

In Japan Lafcadio Hearn is an extremely popular poet. The donation of Lafcadio Hearn’s books by Mitsubishi Greece is designed to increase his profile in Greece. The books will be distributed via the Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religion.

Hearn’s Japanese name is Yakumo Koizumi, and the great-grandson of Bon Koizumi prefaced the Japanese Mosaic (Japanese Miscellany title of the original). The book was translated and graphically designed by Tety Solou, with pictures from Takis Efstathiou file.

‘As a great-grandson of Hearn’, writes Bon Koizumi, ‘I'm happy because for the first time three works have been translated into Greek, and are available to the general public. In a letter to his friend Basil Hall Chamberlain, Hearn writes, ‘More and more, I feel and see the similarity between Japanese life, thought and elegance with Ancient Greece. Every day I discover something in life around me similar to ancient Greek life. Like the sunflowers that both resemble chrysanthemums, always looking for the sun ...’.
Present at the donation ceremony was Mr. Haruki Hayashi, Chief Executive Officer for Europe and Africa of Mitsubishi Corporation, and Mr. Toshinari Tanaka, president of Mitsubishi Hellas. Speeches were delivered by Ambassador of Japan to Greece Masuo Nishibayashi, and Mr. Haruki Hayashi, and the Education Minister of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Nikos Filis.

Mrs. Maria Genitsariou, head of the Department of Historical Archives - Center for Cultural Research and Studies of the Bank of Greece, and curator of the Historical Centre of Lafcadio Hearn at Lefkada, also spoke. She is in charge of the logistical exercise of distributing the books to the designated schools in Greece. She noted that the book donation project fuses, through Hearn’s work, four nationalities, Irish, American, Japanese, and Greek.

The official presentation of the books, was then proffered by Mitsubishi Corporation, Greece, Chairman, Toshinari Tanaka. This was followed by a traditional Japanese ceremony called Kagamiwari. (During Kagamiwari, the wooden lid of the traditional sake barrel (Kagami) is broken (wari) or opened (biraki) during the sake ceremony by one or more wooden hammers). The guests then drank sake, as a toast. "Just as they did in ancient Athens after the Purchase" Lafcadio Hearn, wise beyond his time, might have observed. Yet another ‘bridge between Greece and Japan.’

Masuo Nishibayashi.

Masuo Nishibayashi και ο κ.
